I've recently dug up all the music I used to listen to when I was 12, 13...it's funny, I clearly remember going through an ill-advised Canadian soft-rock phase *shudder* that involved listening to some kind of 5-disc compilation of Sarah McLachlan, the Crash Test Dummies, and Sloan, among others. Admittedly, not *all* Canadian music is awful - I've always liked the Arrogant Worms, but, anyway, it was a phase. Let's leave it at that. (Ed. note: In other news, I am excessively proud to admit I was never the boy band type.)
Anyway, I was thinking about music I haven't listened to in a long time, and No Doubt's Rock Steady immediately came to mind.
Most music critics will be all like "Rock Steady is far inferior to No Doubt's earlier albums" but songs like "Underneath it All" will always rock. Always. The music is pure 90's, but still translates into the 10's. And Gwen Stefani has an INCREDIBLE voice. Which is why I also feel like the music has kind of fallen under the radar in the wake of Gwen Stefani's decision to embark on a solo career.
LONG DISTANCE. DON'T TALK ABOUT. ;)
Also: Garbage.
No Doubt - Rock Steady
Garbage - Androgyny
Clearly I had a thing for post-riot grrl bands with strong female lead singers...
